of the advantages of giving to the Community Foundation for South Central New York is
that you can direct your gift to a variety of different funds within the Foundation’s endowment, choosing the one
that’s exactly right for you.
Types of Funds:
The CommuniFund™
This multi-purpose fund is the easiest way to make a gift. A portion of this fund is used annually to make grants
to local nonprofits at the discretion of the Foundation’s board of directors, guided by a spending policy designed
to protect and increase the fund for future needs. The CommuniFund™ is key to the Foundation’s ability to tailor
its grantmaking to meet community needs as they evolve over time. All unrestricted contributions are added to this
fund. Gifts of any size are gratefully accepted.

Donor Advised Funds
Donor advised funds offer donors who wish to play a role in grantmaking decisions the opportunity to suggest areas
of interest. Although the law requires that final grant approvals are the responsibility of the Foundation’s
board, you’re encouraged to recommend grants, and can rely on the Foundation staff’s expertise to find
possibilities that match your interests and giving priorities.

Field of Interest Funds
These funds direct donor gifts into specific areas of interest, such as education, health, or the arts. Field of
interest funds are open to additional gifts from any donor who shares the concerns of the fund. The Community
Foundation currently offers field of interest opportunities in the areas of the arts, environment, education, and
women’s and children’s issues. But for a donor who wishes to establish a new fund of this type, the possibilities
are wide-ranging.

Designated Funds
You can establish designated funds to support a particular program, agency or institution. The fund serves as an
endowment for the designated recipient, providing periodic grants. The Foundation staff and board monitor the use
of grants distributed from each designated fund to ensure that the recipient uses them in the manner you intend.

Scholarship Funds
Perhaps you’d like to create a scholarship fund to benefit an individual school or students who want to pursue a
particular area of study. Scholarships can also be established to help those in public service receive training or
professional development. Because specific IRS regulations apply to such funds, the Community Foundation staff
assist in establishing criteria and procedures.

For contributions to funds other than the unrestricted CommuniFund™, donors are advised to contact Foundation
staff before initiating the gift. While any size gift may be added to an existing fund, minimums are required to
establish funds.
